On June 28, 1942, Walter Gunn was killed by Sheriff Edwin E. Evans and Deputy Sheriff Henry F. Faucett in Tuskegee, Macon County, Alabama. The Department of Justice investigated the case. A federal grand jury indicted Evans and Faucett under 18 U.S.C. § 52. They were acquitted by an all-white jury in Opelika, Alabama.
